The inspiration for Boundless Nations goes back to 2006, and a collection of stoned home-schooled teenagers sitting in a field, discussing how they would run a country.
Looking back, we aren’t even sure if any of those kids had ever played a TTRPG (some probably), although we had all played 4X computer games.
It was essentially a way to pass hours of free time without any money, equipment or even plan for the game. Just talking, imagining and improvising to weave lengthy epic stories of empires growing over aeons and ultimately falling to one another in an apocalyptic climax.
Years later, one of those stoned, home-schooled teenagers made a friend from broader society, who realised that this spoken 4X game represented an opportunity to create something that has not yet truly existed- a full-fledged 4X TTRPG.
We set about writing formal rules for turn taking, tracking technological and cultural developments over hundreds of turns, creating playable factions, exploitable flora, fauna, and resources, battle mechanics, and even media to support gameplay, such as graphic design and music.
For us, this is an extension of the creative joy we got from playing. Creating a fully accessible and playable 4X TTRPG for anyone who loves weaving stories with their friends as much as we do.
As the project develops, you will be able to play it for youself! As we release further Lore, visual and musical content, and ultimately, the core rule book.
Have fun world building,
Jesse & John
